Having sold a marketing agency, the temptation was to go back in again to another marketing agency. To stick to the knitting. However, I was drawn to do something new. Something with careers. Something with products. Something not yet decided, but something I had to be confident I could create. Either way, I wanted to try new things and learn new skills.
My career was very settled but I wanted to start again which is never easy when one has lots of success in one area. I loved marketing and innovation and felt I could bring these with me in any new endeavors.
This week I was excited to receive delivery of the first draft copies of my new book Multi-Me. It looks great and some further proofing and edits are underway before it becomes available initally in book and eBook formats. So hopefully I am finding my new Personal Market Fit.
Are you excelling in your career and really happy with your work and your income? Or is there room for improvement, or a complete overhaul?
What is Personal Market Fit?
I created the concept of ‘Personal Market Fit’ as the goal for the use of the Multi-Me Map. Based on the concept of ‘Product Market Fit’ which is used by product developers to find the sweet spot between the product and the market.
With Product Market Fit, the product’s value proposition and positioning is perfect for the target market. Therefore, it could possibly sell in sufficient quantities for the product to have a chance of success.
Meanwhile Personal Market Fit is doubly challenging as the market has to desire your offering, while you also have to with how the market wants to work with you. It needs to be mutually desirable.
I encourage you to consider multiple career options and identify your ideal market fit, aligning your skills, interests, and assets with market demands. Are you in demand? Are you well paid for your work? Are you happy at work?
This concept was created to highlight the need for a more personalised and market-driven approach to finding your perfect work life. This gives you the opportunity to try and identify your Personal Market Fit, which is how you would like to be known in the marketplace.
How to find your Personal Market Fit?
As mentioned earlier, the market is moving towards demanding more people work as freelancers, whether they desire it or not. There is an important distinction between ‘Jobs’ and ‘Jobs To Be Done’ as one is the more traditional employment, while the latter is totally open to how the job gets done.
The best way to have your finger on the pulse of a market and identify needs and unmet needs is to have the inside track, with direct market experience. Countless market opportunities exist for workers in the local and global consumer, enterprise, and governmental markets.
Watch out for global trends impacting consumers, companies or society as the bigger the problem, the bigger the challenge, and the bigger the payoff. With the passage of time, opportunities open and close as the market shifts through its lifecycle. If you’re too early, you will have to wait around for work, and if you’re too late the market will be gone.
Ultimately, seizing a market opportunity requires a combination of careful analysis, creativity, and action. There may be a gap in the market, but is there a market in the gap?
By offering yourself to the market, and seeing what the market wants, you can adjust your offering to try and get your Personal Market Fit. This will help you find work more easily and be in demand no matter your Career Personas, such as Workers, Partners, Owners or Multipliers.
Similar to market testing products, you may have to conduct different ‘Career Experiments’ in order to test some ideas with the market. I wrote about Career Personas and Career Experiments previously and all of these ideas are in my new book Multi-Me. They are covered in a lot more detail, as these newsletters are just small tasters.
