One of the advantages of a book is that they are great for gifting. It’s an effective way to get your ideas out there, all packaged up in a nice book.

Writing a book is not for everyone, but creating physical products has never been easier. Much of my commercial success came from relationships that began with gifting unique physical products to people I admire and want to work with.

What started with gifting my book ‘Learn Earn Own’ to Gina London at her postal address, ended up with a very insightful article about the book in the Sunday Independent newspaper in Ireland last week.

I popped it in the post along with some postcards. She received it, said ‘what a cool book’ and we set up an interview.

Thanks to Gina for being so warm and welcoming, even though some may see this as a cold outreach. Not Gina, she was super friendly.

We all know the world of work is changing. Gone are the days when people joined a company in their 20s, climbed the ladder for four decades and retired with a gold watch, a farewell party and a nice pension.

Today, we move jobs and sectors more often and increasingly juggle side-projects, consulting work, entrepreneurial ventures and portfolio careers. Now throw in the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the impact of AI.

When I recently spoke with Irish entrepreneur, educator and author Conor Lynch about the changing world of work, one phrase he said to me stood out. “There was no book for that.”

He wasn’t talking about artificial intelligence or some future workplace scenarios. He was describing his own career as someone who moved between employment, entrepreneurship and business ownership, often finding himself in situations that conventional career advice didn’t address effectively.

Conor believes millions of us face similar challenges. From graduates wondering what jobs will still exist in 10 years, to mid-career professionals questioning how technology will reshape their industry, many of us feel we’re in choppy waters without compass or charts.

His response has been to write the book he wishes he had read when he was starting out.

In Learn, Earn, Own, Conor doesn’t just describe the stormy work currents. He offers what he calls a “practical playbook to navigate the overlap of employment, entrepreneurship, collaboration and personal ownership”. It is a framework to help make sense of careers that don’t follow a straight line.

After studying marketing at UCD, Conor built a career in digital marketing before launching his own agency, working with global brands including Sony, Volkswagen, Huawei, EY and CPL. He sold the business in early 2020.

Not your traditional career path progression. And reflecting on where he’d come from was Conor’s light-bulb moment.

“We study for careers on the career ladder,” he told me. “But there was no map for somebody who wanted to navigate both employment and entrepreneurship.”

Employment, consulting, freelancing, side ventures, advisory work and entrepreneurship are no longer separate categories. They can be different chapters of the same career.

One of the more interesting concepts in Conor’s book is the idea of “career assets”.

Typically, we measure professional success through job titles, promotions and salary increases. Conor points out many people overlook other important strengths, like our expertise, relationships, intellectual property, professional communities, digital content or personal brands. Unlike a job title, they can continue to create value even when a role changes or disappears.

In Conor’s own case, a personal brand he developed years ago eventually led to business opportunities, clients and ultimately the successful sale of his company.

He’s not advocating we each quit our job and become an entrepreneur. But he is asking us to consider what would remain, if your current role disappeared tomorrow.

For some people, the answer might be a network. For others, it could be a reputation, a specialist expertise, a portfolio of work or a side project that has grown steadily over time.

As AI continues to reshape industries and organisations continue to evolve, these assets are becoming increasingly important. They provide options, flexibility and resilience at a time when certainty feels in shorter supply than ever.

Another theme running throughout Conor’s book is collaboration.

Many of us still approach careers as individual pursuits. We update our CVs, pursue qualifications and focus on our own advancement. Conor believes the future depends more heavily on our ability to work with others.

That conviction is also what led him to create a workshop and networking platform called Collabie. The goal is to help people find meaningful opportunities to work together, rather than relying on chance encounters at networking events.

As the website states: “The future of work isn’t just jobs or going solo, it’s networks of people building things together.”

His point is not really about technology. It is about recognising how complex opportunities often require multiple skills, multiple perspectives and multiple contributors.

Some of the successful people I have worked with are happy not to be the smartest person in the room. Instead, they are the people who connect others, share opportunities, build partnerships and create communities around ideas.

While some people are perfectly happy to stay in traditional career paths and have no desire to build side projects or portfolio careers, Conor observes that a growing number of us are looking for practical ways to prepare for a more fluid future.

That’s why I want to make sure and share one particular piece of advice from Conor: “Dig the well before you’re thirsty.”

The future of work may not arrive exactly as anyone predicts, but we can all agree that technology is reshaping roles. Careers are becoming less linear, and the skills that helped us succeed in the past may not be enough for what comes next.

So, while we can’t control every change coming our way, we can invest in the relationships, expertise, adaptability, judgment and a new playbook to help make us more valuable for wherever the next wave may take us.

As you may know, I was temporarily out of action recently after getting my appendix removed.

Before this, I ran some successful experiments with a new event format for Collaborative Careers, called Collabie. The idea is from my Future of Work book, ‘Learn Earn Own’.

The Future of Work isn’t just jobs or going solo; it’s groups of people building things together.

Collabie is where you can join forces with other like-minded people to create ideas, projects, apps, income, and assets, etc. I aim to have experts in AI & Automation on hand to help guests, too.

I will run another small, invitation-only private event. Everyone will get to participate in my new Collabie experience and introduce themselves to others there in an Open Mic section.

After this small event, I will open the event up to a bigger audience in a bigger venue.

Armed with a letter from my doctor, I recently headed to St. Vincent’s Emergency Department, did a bunch of tests, and … I had acute appendicitis, so there was an operation the following morning.

So it ended up as 5 nights in St. Vincent’s, with Aisling and Daniel keeping my spirits up.

I knew I felt a bit off recently ... very, very mild discomfort, but slowly getting worse.

Feel pretty good now and well rested.

Get those pains and aches checked out, no matter how insignificant they may seem!

So that’s why I have been so quiet lately … !

But I’m back now, and excited to run more Collabie events!

During the lockdowns of 2020-21, I used the time to interview some of Ireland’s most interesting business people I could track down. I also chatted to others from around the world, and I saw some patterns emerging. Get a job, do a side-hustle and do your own thing was common.

I quickly saw that the 100-year-old Career Ladder was no longer relevant to most people and that most career plans were mostly text. I saw a gap for a new career tool with more visualisation, collaboration, and maybe even some gamification.

While new to ‘careers’, I was very experienced in education, design thinking, product development etc. I started running events in Dublin called Career Lab to meet people and sense-check my ideas. I was on track. I dipped in and out of this project while working on other things, getting married and starting a family etc.

Careers as we know them are over. The Career Ladder is broken. Linear career paths go nowhere fast. More work is being automated. It is crazy to write this, but it’s true.

As workers grapple with the Future of Work, traditional career professionals are also faced with new challenges. How can they help talent without new thinking, new tools, and templates?

The Future of Work isn’t linear, and lonely. It’s multi-linear and collaborative.

Yes, everything is changing. I even created what I call Multi-linear Careers. To help everyone seeking solutions to these problems affecting workers, I researched the area in depth. I even published a couple of books about Career Assets, namely ‘Learn Earn Own’ and ‘The Assets Ladder’. Although my books have great reviews, my innovative ideas on careers really come to life with my workshops, which focus on personalisation, collaboration, and gamification.

With a background in digital innovation, education, and events, I’m keen to help individuals and groups workshop the Future of Work. Why? Because I think our careers and working lives need to be brainstormed together, and they’re going to be a team game from now on.

I live in Dublin with my wife Aisling, and our young son Daniel. I wonder what will the world be like when he grows up?

For me the world was full of opportunity as I travelled the world after graduating. I spent time living and working in London, Sydney, San Francisco, and Leiden in the Netherlands. My career journey accelerated in 1999 when I launched my very first personal brand website, which helped me earn a four-year visa to Australia.

I’m an innovator, educator, and author who grew a personal brand side hustle, Connector, into a seven-figure agency, working with clients such as Huawei, Sony, Volkswagen, and EY. After selling the business in February 2020, I turned my focus to careers and the problem of worker disengagement and wasted human potential.

My career has been one long experiment, marked by launching events, websites, brands, and businesses for myself. For others, I earned a living advising global brands, winning awards for digital innovation, and training over 5,000 professionals in digital business. Those experiments taught me that the traditional Career Ladder does not apply to people like me, and is broken for most.

That belief inspired my book Learn Earn Own, which features the Assets Ladder to replace the Career Ladder. There is a second edition called The Assets Ladder, which has some bonus content for career professionals.

Both books offers practical tools like the LEAP Score, Career Assets Scorecard, and Career Assets Map to help people Learn More, Earn More, and Own More. Success today comes from building careerassets: skills, collaborations, intellectual property, equity, and a personal brand that multiplies opportunities.

Welcome to the future.

As I sat in Helsinki airport waiting for a flight to a family celebration in northern Finland, I sipped my coffee nervously as reality sank in. I was just off the phone from a live interview with Rick O’Shea from RTE, Ireland’s top radio station. I was introduced to the listeners as Don Leahy, a fictitious character I made up to hide my true identity.

Using the pseudonym Don Leahy, I orchestrated a grassroots marketing campaign on the Bebo social network, which captured widespread media attention. My alter-ego, Don, was also featured on the BBC website for the same story, the very same day. Was Don taking over my life?

What started as a nostalgic campaign by my t-shirt brand ‘Conman’ to resurrect a beloved Irish soft drink brand, Cavan Cola, quickly became a stressful story of personal branding and professional risk. Conman was a nickname that embodied my irreverent approach to gangster-inspired ‘Suspiciously Good’ t-shirts.

The campaign included creating t-shirts for ‘Cavan Cola’, boldly using Coca-Cola’s iconic white fonts, on Cavan’s famous royal blue county colours. It was a delicate dance of creativity and potential job jeopardy, given that my day job was in a digital marketing agency actively working on Coca-Cola marketing in Ireland.

The inevitable collision between my corporate work and free spirit came soon after. A high-profile publicity stunt on a national television show got me in trouble. I worked at a marketing agency, and the show was sponsored by our client, a Diageo brand. My stunt with a parody t-shirt of former Irish Prime Minister, Charlie Haughey, hastened my departure. However, what felt like a big career setback was also a cultural high.

Recognising the need for a more subtle approach, I retired the edgy Conman brand, and Don Leahy left the scene. I launched a more career-aligned personal brand called ‘Connector’ with Conor Lynch out front. Undeterred by previous bruises, I also appeared on the Irish edition of the Dragons’ Den show to promote Connector, my side gig. Shortly afterwards, I quit my job after winning side projects from brands like HP and Canon.

The Internet changed everything

Although I was studying for a marketing degree in the 1990s when the internet appeared, it was not yet available as something you could study. This is one of the problems education still faces. It takes years for formal education to catch up with the real world.

Back then, one of my earliest attempts at an entrepreneurial endeavor landed me in trouble, ironically, at Ireland’s top graduate business school, the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School. I got suspended for a side project, and it took me three months to get back in with my name cleared. Not being listened to made me feel like an outsider who could be discarded. It took me a long time to get over the injustice of this terrible experience and finally get an apology from the professor in question.

In the early days of digital marketing, long before structured courses and micro-credentials existed, personal experimentation was my primary pathway to learning. I knew the world was changing, and it was exciting. I got stuck in, started experimenting, and got some help from my more technical friends, like Manus O’Reilly. With his help, I launched my first Conor Lynch personal brand website in 1999.

So my journey began with several audacious side projects that would become pivotal in understanding the power of personal branding, digital marketing, and social media. It’s a reminder that the most valuable skills are often learned outside traditional employment.

This journey of discovery was never about rebellion, but instead a learning laboratory. Each idea, each personal project, and each experiment was a first step in testing the tools and techniques of the time. Long before it became a mainstream concept, I lived the philosophy of continuous learning, increased earning, and taking ownership of my career.

I even worked part-time in the education space for years. One assignment was two years as an adjunct professor at Maynooth University. I designed, delivered, and marked entire business degree modules. This lasted while the university built up its capacity and capability in social media.

Looking back as a multi-award-winning innovator in digital business for 25 years, I built a career helping others navigate the adoption of three gigantic waves of consumer technology: the Internet, social media, and now AI. My career journey saw me move from ‘time sheet to term sheet’, from clocking in as an employee, to clocking out with a business sale.

Fast forward to today, and traditional linear career paths are becoming increasingly obsolete. An alarming 85% of individuals report being disengaged at work. Many of these are trapped in a cycle of stress, burnout, and unfulfilling employment, which seems impossible to escape. People are living longer, changing jobs more frequently, and facing stagnating incomes while simultaneously seeking meaning, flexibility, and financial security.

For 100 years, we were told a simple story. Study hard. Get a job. Climb the ladder. But today, the traditional Career Ladder is broken. It is broken at the bottom with a sizeable reduction in entry-level jobs. It is broken at the top for workers in their 40s, 50s, and 60s who find it hard to secure new roles comparable to previous ones. This is set against a backdrop of workers being forced to work later and later in life rather than receiving pensions.

For generations, the dominant career transaction for many has been simple: work more hours and earn more money. However, with wages stagnant and costs soaring, this is not working out as promised.
