During the lockdowns of 2020-21, I used the time to interview some of Ireland’s most interesting business people I could track down. I also chatted to others from around the world, and I saw some patterns emerging. Get a job, do a side-hustle and do your own thing was common.

I quickly saw that the 100-year-old Career Ladder was no longer relevant to most people and that most career plans were mostly text. I saw a gap for a new career tool with more visualisation, collaboration, and maybe even some gamification.

While new to ‘careers’, I was very experienced in education, design thinking, product development etc. I started running events in Dublin called Career Lab to meet people and sense-check my ideas. I was on track. I dipped in and out of this project while working on other things, getting married and starting a family etc.

Careers as we know them are over. The Career Ladder is broken. Linear career paths go nowhere fast. More work is being automated. It is crazy to write this, but it’s true.

Although my books have great reviews, my innovative ideas on careers really come to life with my workshops, which focus on personalisation, collaboration, and gamification.

With a background in digital innovation, education, and events, I’m keen to help individuals and groups workshop the Future of Work. Why? Because I think our careers and working lives need to be brainstormed together, and they’re going to be a team game from now on.

I live in Dublin with my wife Aisling, and our young son Daniel. I wonder what will the world be like when he grows up?

For me the world was full of opportunity as I travelled the world after graduating. I spent time living and working in London, Sydney, San Francisco, and Leiden in the Netherlands. My career journey accelerated in 1999 when I launched my very first personal brand website, which helped me earn a four-year visa to Australia.

I’m an innovator, educator, and author who grew a personal brand side hustle, Connector, into a seven-figure agency, working with clients such as Huawei, Sony, Volkswagen, and EY. After selling the business in February 2020, I turned my focus to careers and the problem of worker disengagement and wasted human potential.

My career has been one long experiment, marked by launching events, websites, brands, and businesses for myself. For others, I earned a living advising global brands, winning awards for digital innovation, and training over 5,000 professionals in digital business. Those experiments taught me that the traditional Career Ladder does not apply to people like me, and is broken for most.

That belief inspired my book Learn Earn Own, which features the Assets Ladder to replace the Career Ladder. There is a second edition called The Assets Ladder, which has some bonus content for career professionals.

Both books offers practical tools like the LEAP Score, Career Assets Scorecard, and Career Assets Map to help people Learn More, Earn More, and Own More. Success today comes from building careerassets: skills, collaborations, intellectual property, equity, and a personal brand that multiplies opportunities.

Welcome to the future.

As I sat in Helsinki airport waiting for a flight to a family celebration in northern Finland, I sipped my coffee nervously as reality sank in. I was just off the phone from a live interview with Rick O’Shea from RTE, Ireland’s top radio station. I was introduced to the listeners as Don Leahy, a fictitious character I made up to hide my true identity.

Using the pseudonym Don Leahy, I orchestrated a grassroots marketing campaign on the Bebo social network, which captured widespread media attention. My alter-ego, Don, was also featured on the BBC website for the same story, the very same day. Was Don taking over my life?

What started as a nostalgic campaign by my t-shirt brand ‘Conman’ to resurrect a beloved Irish soft drink brand, Cavan Cola, quickly became a stressful story of personal branding and professional risk. Conman was a nickname that embodied my irreverent approach to gangster-inspired ‘Suspiciously Good’ t-shirts.

The campaign included creating t-shirts for ‘Cavan Cola’, boldly using Coca-Cola’s iconic white fonts, on Cavan’s famous royal blue county colours. It was a delicate dance of creativity and potential job jeopardy, given that my day job was in a digital marketing agency actively working on Coca-Cola marketing in Ireland.

The inevitable collision between my corporate work and free spirit came soon after. A high-profile publicity stunt on a national television show got me in trouble. I worked at a marketing agency, and the show was sponsored by our client, a Diageo brand. My stunt with a parody t-shirt of former Irish Prime Minister, Charlie Haughey, hastened my departure. However, what felt like a big career setback was also a cultural high.

Recognising the need for a more subtle approach, I retired the edgy Conman brand, and Don Leahy left the scene. I launched a more career-aligned personal brand called ‘Connector’ with Conor Lynch out front. Undeterred by previous bruises, I also appeared on the Irish edition of the Dragons’ Den show to promote Connector, my side gig. Shortly afterwards, I quit my job after winning side projects from brands like HP and Canon.

The Internet changed everything

Although I was studying for a marketing degree in the 1990s when the internet appeared, it was not yet available as something you could study. This is one of the problems education still faces. It takes years for formal education to catch up with the real world.

Back then, one of my earliest attempts at an entrepreneurial endeavor landed me in trouble, ironically, at Ireland’s top graduate business school, the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School. I got suspended for a side project, and it took me three months to get back in with my name cleared. Not being listened to made me feel like an outsider who could be discarded. It took me a long time to get over the injustice of this terrible experience and finally get an apology from the professor in question.

In the early days of digital marketing, long before structured courses and micro-credentials existed, personal experimentation was my primary pathway to learning. I knew the world was changing, and it was exciting. I got stuck in, started experimenting, and got some help from my more technical friends, like Manus O’Reilly. With his help, I launched my first Conor Lynch personal brand website in 1999.

So my journey began with several audacious side projects that would become pivotal in understanding the power of personal branding, digital marketing, and social media. It’s a reminder that the most valuable skills are often learned outside traditional employment.

This journey of discovery was never about rebellion, but instead a learning laboratory. Each idea, each personal project, and each experiment was a first step in testing the tools and techniques of the time. Long before it became a mainstream concept, I lived the philosophy of continuous learning, increased earning, and taking ownership of my career.

I even worked part-time in the education space for years. One assignment was two years as an adjunct professor at Maynooth University. I designed, delivered, and marked entire business degree modules. This lasted while the university built up its capacity and capability in social media.

Looking back as a multi-award-winning innovator in digital business for 25 years, I built a career helping others navigate the adoption of three gigantic waves of consumer technology: the Internet, social media, and now AI. My career journey saw me move from ‘time sheet to term sheet’, from clocking in as an employee, to clocking out with a business sale.

Fast forward to today, and traditional linear career paths are becoming increasingly obsolete. An alarming 85% of individuals report being disengaged at work. Many of these are trapped in a cycle of stress, burnout, and unfulfilling employment, which seems impossible to escape. People are living longer, changing jobs more frequently, and facing stagnating incomes while simultaneously seeking meaning, flexibility, and financial security.

For 100 years, we were told a simple story. Study hard. Get a job. Climb the ladder. But today, the traditional Career Ladder is broken. It is broken at the bottom with a sizeable reduction in entry-level jobs. It is broken at the top for workers in their 40s, 50s, and 60s who find it hard to secure new roles comparable to previous ones. This is set against a backdrop of workers being forced to work later and later in life rather than receiving pensions.

For generations, the dominant career transaction for many has been simple: work more hours and earn more money. However, with wages stagnant and costs soaring, this is not working out as promised.

Furthermore, the Career Ladder forces you to trade time for money without building real ownership. And ‘safe’ careers are no longer safe. Careers are one of the most critical decisions a person makes, yet you were never taught how to design a career. Until now.

I talk to so many workers who are worried that relying on one employer and one income is no longer a safe bet. Most people are smart and work hard, but their rewards don’t match their efforts - they are leaving money on the table. Is the table is being taken away now too? I know this book can save you years of wasted effort and costly lost opportunities to earn thousands more over your lifetime. Or much more than that?

Technical innovations, particularly AI, are accelerating this transformation. Sam Altman of OpenAI suggests we might soon witness the emergence of billion-dollar, single-person companies - a concept unimaginable just a few years ago.

Work is undergoing a radical transformation that challenges everything we understand about work, careers, and making money. By 2034, the traditional 9-to-5 job is predicted to become extinct, with the concept of a “job for life” already consigned to the dustbin of history for most roles. Jobs are disappearing, and many people have no backup plan.

Influential thought leaders are painting a picture of a dramatic workforce evolution. LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman predicts that independent workers will constitute 50% of the workforce within a decade, while the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) forecasts that 50% of workers will have multiple income sources by 2035.

While many people feel trapped in the usual employment models, some escape. In 2021, the world witnessed the Great Resignation, where millions of people walked away from jobs that no longer worked for them. Headlines framed it as mass quitting, but underneath was something deeper: a collective rethinking of what work should mean.

People weren’t just resigning; they were redesigning. They sought flexibility, freedom, and ownership. Many launched side hustles, moved into freelancing, or retrained in entirely new industries. It wasn’t an end, it was a beginning.

The lesson is clear: security doesn’t come from building on rented land. It comes from building assets that create options and income on your own terms. The Great Resignation was really the first wave of a bigger shift, a move from stagnation to experimentation.

I want others to succeed much faster than I did, and this passion has led me to write this book. But I don’t want you to just read, I want you to use the tools in this book to build a better future for yourself, your friends, and your family. Although we need to take ownership of our careers, there is also an equally important recommendation to collaborate with others, despite the benefit of independence.

Ownership changes your relationship with work entirely. Instead of trading time for a fixed wage, you build something that grows in value while you sleep. It gives you leverage that a salary never can, as it gives you a position of strength rather than weakness.

From Career Ladder to Career Assets

Your career is probably your life’s biggest investment in terms of time and money. Your potential earnings with additional income streams would shock you if you did the calculations. Lost earnings compound daily, making early moves a big advantage in lifetime earnings. Time has emerged as the ultimate career currency, demanding a radical shift in how we invest it. And ownership is a career multiplier. It gives you a lot of leverage.

Conor Lynch’s new book Learn Earn Own argues that workers must build multiple income streams as traditional career paths falter

The traditional career ladder is crumbling, and workers need to build portfolios of skills and income streams rather than depend on single employers, according to Dublin-based digital entrepreneur Conor Lynch.

Lynch’s book Learn Earn Own arrives as graduate and junior positions have fallen by about 32% since late 2022, contributing to widespread career anxiety among young professionals. His central thesis challenges decades of conventional wisdom about linear career progression.

From career ladder to assets ladder

Lynch’s framework emerged from reflecting on his own non-traditional career path during the pandemic lockdowns, shortly after selling his digital agency Connector to Granite Digital for an undisclosed sum. Having built the company from a side project into a seven-figure business, he began interviewing others about their career journeys.

“Around the time of the lockdowns, I started looking into careers and interviewing people about their careers,” Lynch recalls. “I started seeing patterns developing where people move from job to a side hustle and then into a business. Very quickly I could see that the career ladder was still the main model for careers, and it was very linear. That wasn’t what I was seeing at all.”

The patterns he observed didn’t match established career guidance. “There was no real model for people to help them understand that you can do multiple things. You don’t need to be consigned to one thing, one job at a time, one path, one ladder.”

Personal brand as primary asset

Lynch identifies personal branding as the most accessible starting point for building career assets. “I think the primary career asset that people should think about is their personal brand. That’s the easiest and most accessible,” he says.

His advice centres on ownership rather than dependency on platforms. “Everyone should have an online home. Your online home is not your page on LinkedIn – that’s rented territory. Everyone should have their own piece of property on the internet. That’s their domain name, having a professional email address that’s not Gmail.”

The approach reflects lessons learned during his early career. “Over 20 years ago, I saw the internet as the mechanism by which anybody can create anything and own something. Even if it’s a TikTok page or LinkedIn page or your own website, it moves your mind into ownership.”

Surviving the AI storm

The timing of Lynch’s book coincides with growing concerns about artificial intelligence displacing traditional graduate roles. “One statistic shows that the number of graduate roles are down by a third since the advent of ChatGPT,” he notes.

Rather than waiting for opportunities, Lynch advocates proactive skill development. “If you can’t get a job, just crack on and do a learning project. Figure out what to learn, start playing with AI, start playing with automation, experiment with the tools and the work you’d like to get.”

This philosophy extends to his hiring practices. “I’ve employed people without degrees because they had amazing skills. If you’re not getting that first step on the ladder, just create your own ladder.”

“Learn, Earn & Own” combines theoretical frameworks with practical implementation tools. The book includes templates, scorecards, and AI prompts, alongside a companion web application that generates personalised career path options based on uploaded CVs and stated goals.

“What I’m hearing back from reviewers is that it’s very practical, not preachy, and encouraging,” Lynch says. The book has received an average rating of 4.8 out of five stars, with readers particularly valuing what one grandfather described as “career coaching in a box” when sharing the tools with his grandson.

Lynch wrote and designed the entire book using accessible tools like Canva, embodying his message about democratised creation. “The tools are getting so much easier than they used to be. Canva is very easy to use. There are tools that are infinitely simpler for a non-expert than 10 years ago.”

Broader economic implications

Lynch’s framework reflects wider shifts in employment patterns. He cites research from the OECD and LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman suggesting that 50% of workers could be independent workers or freelancers by 2030 in America.

“There are more people on the outside of companies managing their careers and looking for clients,” he observes. “The book is for people like them – how do I manage my career? But also, how do people collaborate better together when so many are on the outside?”

His approach deliberately blurs traditional boundaries between employment and self-employment. “One of the big things I want to do is bring employment and self-employment together into one career map. You can actually do both, you probably will do both, and move between both.”

Lynch sees his current work as part of a broader mission to help people build various types of assets. “There are real assets, financial assets, business assets, and now the book is about career assets. I want to help people, individuals, families, even organizations, to create and build assets.”

The entrepreneur plans to expand beyond the book through workshops and digital tools, continuing his practice of “learning in public” – a concept he advocates for others seeking to build their professional profiles.

As traditional career certainties continue to erode, Lynch’s message resonates with workers seeking greater control over their professional destinies. His final advice encapsulates the shift he believes is already underway: “Always remember that jobs are temporary and assets are forever.”

For generations, it was presented as a guarantee. Study hard, get your degree and secure a graduate job. Climb steadily and retire comfortably.

It was a script repeated in classrooms and kitchens across Ireland, a quiet promise that stability would follow effort and loyalty.

But according to Oldcastle digital entrepreneur Conor P. Lynch, that promise is beginning to unravel, and artificial intelligence is exposing just how fragile it may have become.

“The career ladder story was simple,” says the Oldcastle author. “But the world of work is no longer simple.”

In his new book, Learn Earn Own, the digital strategist argues that the traditional career model of one employer, one income stream and one upward path is breaking down at both ends. Entry-level roles are shrinking as automation absorbs routine tasks, while mid-career workers report feeling stalled, exposed and increasingly uncertain about what lies ahead.

“The story we were told was linear,” Conor says. “Study hard, get a job, climb the ladder. But the world of work has changed dramatically, and career advice hasn’t caught up.”

Since the release of ChatGPT in late 2022, graduate and junior job postings in parts of the UK and Ireland have fallen sharply. Many tasks once handled by entry-level staff, including research, drafting, data analysis and administrative work, can now be completed in minutes using AI tools.

“In law firms, in marketing agencies, in tech companies, the kind of work that used to justify hiring a graduate can now be automated or heavily accelerated,” says the career strategist. “If fewer people are getting that first rung on the ladder, we have to ask what replaces it.”

While artificial intelligence has dominated headlines in recent months, the Oldcastle entrepreneur insists the underlying weaknesses in the ladder predate AI. Automation, outsourcing and digital transformation have been steadily reshaping the labour market for over a decade. AI, he argues, has simply accelerated what was already in motion.

“This didn’t start with ChatGPT,” he says. “AI has just made it visible. It has sped things up. The pressure that was creeping into graduate and mid-level roles has suddenly become obvious.”

Any role built around repeatable tasks is vulnerable, particularly in sectors where efficiency and cost reduction are priorities. Customer service, administration, research and junior analytical roles are already being reshaped.

“That doesn’t mean there won’t be jobs,” Conor adds. “But the nature of those jobs is changing faster than the advice we’re giving young people.”

He believes the strain is not confined to graduates. Conor regularly speaks with Generation X professionals who followed the rules, built stable careers and now feel exposed to automation or restructuring.

“If entry-level work disappears, the ladder breaks at the bottom,” he says. “But there’s also something happening at the top. I’m hearing from people in their 40s and 50s who feel opportunities are drying up. So the traditional ladder might only really serve a 20-year window in a lifetime. That’s not a long-term strategy anymore.”

For the digital strategist, the conversation must widen beyond students and graduates.

“Most people are smart and work hard,” he says. “But their rewards don’t always match their efforts. They’re leaving money and opportunity on the table because they’ve relied on one income stream.”

His own career informs that view. After years of working within traditional employment structures, Conor branched out around 2010 to build his own digital marketing agency, Connector. What began as a side project evolved into a seven-figure business working with global brands before being acquired by Granite Digital in early 2020, just weeks before the pandemic upended the global economy.

Selling the company gave him unexpected space to reflect.

“I looked back at what we were told in school and compared it to what I’d actually done,” he says. “I realised most of the value in my career didn’t come from climbing a ladder. It came from building assets alongside it.”

What felt at the time like hobbies, building a website, developing a personal brand, speaking at events, were, in hindsight, compounding assets.

“Reputation compounds. Networks compound. Skills compound. Eventually, they create options.”

That insight underpins the central framework of Learn Earn Own, which the Oldcastle author calls the “Assets Ladder”.

Rather than focusing solely on progression within an organisation, the business owner encourages workers to build assets they themselves own, assets that generate leverage over time.

“Income follows assets,” he explains. “Employers own the office, the intellectual property and the systems. That’s why they capture most of the upside. But individuals can build their own assets too.”

Those assets need not be dramatic or risky. They can include a professional network, a personal brand, niche expertise, digital content, collaborative ventures or AI-enabled skills. The aim is not necessarily to abandon employment, but to reduce total dependence on it.

“You don’t have to quit your job,” Conor stresses. “But your job shouldn’t be your only plan.”

He draws a clear distinction between entrepreneurs and what he calls “experimenters”.

“Not everyone wants to run a company,” he says. “There’s a big difference. An experimenter might start writing online, build a LinkedIn presence, create a small digital product or learn AI tools. It’s about testing and learning. Anyone can experiment.”

Artificial intelligence, in the view of the entrepreneur, is not purely a threat. It is also a leveller.

“Yes, AI is putting pressure on entry-level roles. But it’s also creating opportunities. For the first time, someone with no formal coding background can build simple software by describing what they want. You can use AI to design, research and plan.”

He believes access to education is one of AI’s most underestimated benefits.

“For the first time in history, you can design your own personalised education,” he says. “AI can act as a tutor, a curriculum designer, even a career coach. You can learn almost anything, often for free and at your own pace.”

The digital strategist argues this could reshape who gets access to opportunity. In the past, proximity to institutions or financial resources often dictated educational access. Today, someone in a rural town can learn coding, marketing, design or financial literacy directly from global experts using online platforms and AI assisted study.

“That’s hugely empowering,” he says. “If someone is curious and disciplined, they can skill up in ways that weren’t possible before. That changes the playing field.”

At the same time, he cautions that tools alone are not enough.

“Curiosity matters. Adaptability matters. Nobody drifts into opportunity. You have to lean into it.”

The shift also raises difficult questions about higher education and return on investment.

“With the cost of higher education rising, families have to ask about value,” says the author. “Is a degree or Masters worth the money if entry-level roles are shrinking?”

He does not dismiss universities outright, but suggests they may face increasing scrutiny as AI powered self learning tools become more sophisticated.

“There should be a public service announcement for parents,” he says. “The career paths they had may not exist when their children graduate. Families need informed conversations about careers, jobs and AI. Parents need to teach their kids to be learners and doers, not just passengers.”

He also rejects the suggestion that younger workers lack ambition.

“They’re not rejecting success,” Conor says. “They’re rejecting blind loyalty to a system that looks unstable and maybe doesn’t align with their values. They’ve grown up through financial crises, layoffs and now AI disruption. They’re looking for flexibility.”

The Oldcastle entrepreneur describes the future not as jobless, but as multi-linear, a mix of employment, projects, collaborations and asset building that creates resilience.

“The future of work isn’t a job. It’s a portfolio,” he says. “Even small additional income streams or assets can reduce anxiety. If one stream disappears, you’re not starting from zero.”

Ultimately, the career strategist believes the deeper issue is psychological. Many workers still equate security with employment. In a volatile labour market, he argues, security increasingly comes from capability rather than contract.

“The safest position today isn’t loyalty to a company,” he says. “It’s having skills and assets that give you options.”

He is not alarmist about what lies ahead. There will be disruption, he acknowledges. Some roles will disappear. Others will emerge.

“Nobody knows exactly what the jobs market will look like in five or ten years,” he says. “There will be challenges. But the people who will have the best chance of success are curious, adaptable and building high-value skills, especially with AI.”

Lynch said that the message is ultimately one of ownership. The traditional ladder may not vanish entirely, but relying on it alone is increasingly risky.

“Jobs are temporary,” he says. “Assets are what last.”

The death of jobs, or the jobpocalypse, due to AI has been greatly exaggerated but their redesign has not. The job-based model of work is increasingly obsolete as companies move from fixed long-term jobs to skills-based roles.

“Corporate practices such as renting talent, just-in-time staffing and the liquid workforce depict more modular work arrangements beyond employment as traditionally understood,” DCU Business School’s Dr Brian Harney and Prof Claire Gubbin write in the Advances in Developing Human Resources journal.

Decades of secure employment with one company, or even several, may be increasingly unlikely. Yet most of us expect to work for at least 30 to 40 years. Mortgages, pensions and life insurance terms are all designed around jobs that last for decades.

But what if secure, full-time employment only lasted 20 or even 10 years? What might that mean for your career design and financial stability?

“The implications for talent are profound and still contested, depending on the nature of the role, the sector and the perspective under consideration,” Harney and Gubbin state. “Those taking an optimistic view point to the opportunity for greater autonomy, choice and meaningful work engagements. Others caution about the transfer of risk, uncertainty and accountability from the firm to the individual, including the responsibility and costs of upskilling and development.”

The availability of white-collar jobs is shrinking at both the beginning and the end of the career cycle. The introduction of AI has possibly led to fewer entry-level job openings in the short term. And thousands of senior-level tech workers – among the mostly highly paid professionals – in Ireland and globally have found themselves unexpectedly unemployed in their 30s and 40s.

The jobs outlook for laid-off workers in their 50s is getting bleaker in some sectors too. In the US, almost a quarter of those over the age of 50 who are laid off never find another job. This is a reversal of every past recession-and-recovery cycle in which laid-off older workers returned to work faster than younger workers, according to a 2023 study by the Schwartz Center for Economic Analysis.

Employment rates in Europe also start to decline from the age of 50 and drop sharply after 60, according to the OECD Employment Outlook 2025.

“In this context, there is an urgent need to avoid skill declines and foster a culture of continuous learning, shifting to a career model where learning at work takes place throughout life,” the report states.

At the moment, we’re more insulated from these workplace changes in the European Union where there has been a steady increase in the expected duration of working life over the past few decades. In 2024, it was estimated at 37.2 years in Europe. The Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia and Ireland had the longest expected working life, at more than 40 years.

Tenure in individual jobs in Europe is longer: Ireland averages 9.4 years versus the US average of 4.1 years.

Ireland’s employment and economic trends are currently positive too. Both foreign‑owned and Irish‑owned companies expanded their workforces in 2025, according to Enterprise Ireland. Foreign companies grew employment by 1.4 per cent, adding more than 4,500 jobs, while Irish‑owned businesses increased employment by 1.3 per cent, creating more than 3,000 roles. Regionally, the picture is equally strong: every region in Ireland has seen employment growth over the past decade.

But, when America sneezes, Europe catches a cold.

Should we all be preparing for this new world now? Are our employment laws and trade unions strong enough to ensure that work remains meaningful and not increasingly precarious, as it is in the United States?

Time will tell but we need to keep a close eye on what happens to those employees who are laid off in Ireland and the rest of Europe. If employees are made redundant and do succeed in getting another job, are they paid as much as they were or are they forced – or choosing – to enter the gig economy? Do we all need to learn the art of the hustle to ensure we have a sustainable career?

And who is responsible for the retraining and re-employment of laid-off workers in Europe? Harney says this new corporate focus is putting more responsibility for security and skills development – such as digital literacy, critical thinking and resilience – on the individual instead of the employer.

“A key part of this is fragmented workplaces where the focus moves from acquiring (formal recruitment, long-term contracts) to accessing talent (short-term engagement based on need/demand/ access to certain skills),” he says.

Career assets

We need to start thinking differently about our careers, says innovator and educator Conor Lynch. Instead of considering what job roles and responsibilities might suit you, ask yourself instead: how can I position myself in the future?

People are living longer, changing jobs more frequently and facing stagnating incomes, while simultaneously seeking meaning, flexibility and financial security. Worker disengagement and burnout is another issue.

“For generations, the dominant career model for many has been simple: work more hours and earn more money. However, the career-ladder model is broken; it forces you to trade time for money without building real ownership. And safe careers are no longer safe,” says Lynch.

Lynch has written a book based on lessons from his own career transition from employee to digital entrepreneur. The book, Learn Earn Own, was written to help Irish workers to navigate the shifting workforce by developing a new mindset.

“The future of work is not a job. It is a portfolio. But this isn’t about quitting your job; it’s about not letting your job be your only plan. Jobs are temporary, assets are forever,” he says.

To protect your income and lengthen your career, Lynch says you need to start owning more by generating career assets: your brand, skills, relationship, networks, social media. Think about what’s in your career portfolio too in terms of ideas, tools, equipment, proprietary methodologies, frameworks, books, ebooks and podcasts.

You can upskill, diversify and build assets without quitting your job. In this model, you don’t have 10 jobs, you have a multilinear career. You have one job with learning projects on the side instead of just waiting around for Helen in HR to tell you what to do next, says Lynch.

Start to experiment too. It takes courage, but creating your own learning laboratories and side hustles ensures continuous learning, increased earning, and an openness to owning.

“What can you do right now? Upload your CV to an AI chatbot and say ‘I’d like to look for career opportunities based on my current skills.’ AI can be a good initial career coach as it can suggest three potential career options that may protect your career and income for the next 20 years.

“A good job is a great platform but don’t make it a ceiling to your potential. By creating career assets you can have a career that compounds rather than dies out.”
